Abraham Lincoln and
Stephen A. Douglas Statues
 |
On
14 September 2002 in downtown Washington Park, Ottawans and visitors
witnessed the unveiling of
two heroic bronze statues depicting Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A.
Douglas as they may have looked when they debated at that location in the
summer of 1858. Their lively political encounter marked the first of
seven state-wide debates which articulated the nation's conflicting,
contentious attitudes towards the institution of slavery. |

Take State Route 23, which runs n-s through Ottawa,
towards the center of town. Through Center Ottawa, Route 23 is
Columbus St. running one-way north and is LaSalle St. running one-way
south. Washington Park is sandwiched between these two streets. |
|

The statues are located in the
center of the park.
